There was no Tilth sale and nurseries were very limited this year due to quarantine, so I didn’t get much in the way of starts. Fortunately(?), we had numerous volunteer sunflowers growing out of the beds. Since everyone seems to love sunflowers, I figured we would just cultivate those to be something everyone can enjoy as they walk past our house. We even potted several dozen small sunflower starts and dropped them off with friends and neighbors as little sunshine gifts (although I heard that they didn’t transplant very well).
I still planted carrots, lettuces, beans, and some limited tomatoes from seed. Unfortunately, the sunflowers shot up so quickly and put out their giant solar array leaves which then robbed the smaller plants (everything else) of sunlight. The lettuces grow so quickly that they were able to establish before losing the direct sunlight. Next year will be sure to curtail my sunflower enthusiasm. Perhaps relegate the lower 1.5 beds to sunflowers, with just 1 or 2 on the upper beds.
We could not get hold of any ananas noire this year, but did have one (somewhat sickly) pineapple tomato, which is one of the progenitors of the ananas noire. It did still have that faint pineapple flavor. Would be worth trying again in the future if we see it. However, overall we didn’t have much of a tomato bounty as we have had in other years.
Carrots were pretty productive. I am very fond of the stubby ones. Kids are always happy to have a snack of carrots. Also, moved the lettuces to the front since we access them more frequently than the carrots.
