Here is the breakdown of how the garden fared this year. Some surprise upstarts but relatively low yields this year.
- Sunflowers – did very well from seed. The bird netting enclosure protected them at seedling stages.
- Cucumbers – lemon cukes did very well this year. Tasty Jade was very good. Not a ton, but a quality cuke. Would try again, in lieu of oriental express.
- Melons – just never do well in that space. Will try growing in the big planter pots on the deck next year.
- Carrots – focused on proper spacing this year, which may have helped. Grew a nantes snacking carrot, which was very successful. The other variety was Kyoto red, which had very bushy leaves but no good carrots. Most went to seed, possibly due to our hot summer. Some reviews mentioned planting in fall for a winter harvest.
- Raspberry cube – worked out very well. Placed 6 large bamboo stakes encircled by heavy twine. This was strong enough to contain and there was sun exposure both on the outer and inner edges. Was able to train or weave the longer vines along the horizontal twine. Will definitely experiment with this concept next year.
- Bird netting – worked out great. Stitched several segments of bird netting to run the length. Kept the pesky birds from dust bathing and snacking on my seedlings. Had to anchor the PVC sleeves to the outside of the box as we do not have high raised sides. However, worked very well, if less cosmetic result. May consider moving to inner edge next year if I can get started before I plant, and can figure a way to do it securely.
