Nikola was clued into the Pi Night 2016 (3/14/16, get it?) at Hamilton Middle School, where she will likely be attending in 6th grade next year. Some former West Woodland students and parents told her about it and she was very excited to join, even though she isn’t quite a student there yet. She dressed in her best math attire (Fibonacci spiral t-shirt) and fretted over which shoes went best with a Fibonacci spiral t-shirt (leopard print flats).
There were pies of all sorts to partake, sweet and savory. Alton ate two slices of pie. Nikola had 4. Shaynee snagged a piece of pizza pi for T to eat. There were at least a hundred middle schoolers clamoring for food like hungry math loving hordes. The gluten-free chocolate torte (sort of like a pie) that Shaynee brought disappeared in about 2 minutes.
Linda Joss was MC for the pi eating contests and pi recitation contest (the top three went to 162, 143, and 102 digits!) Nikola was really enjoying herself in the spirit of the night, and wasn’t fazed by the mass of older kids. She was a little bummed that the festivities were all contained within the multi purpose common room and the library wasn’t open (apparently she was quite taken with the library when she went on a school tour last month).
She really seemed comfortable in this setting. Hopefully this is a sign that her transition to middle school next year will be just as smooth.
