Battle for the beans!

We got most of the planters planted last weekend.

Planter 1: Giant pumpkin (this year will prune the extras off the vine to grow the central pumpkin big!), carrots (2 varieties), Bluelake bush green beans.

Planter 2: Tomatoes (2 varieties), lemon cucumbers (did not try to separate the root balls this year), lettuce, carrots (3 varieties), space for a melon.

Planter 3: Invasive raspberries, tomatoes (3 varieties), sunflowers (seed pack from Heifer International), mini pumpkin start.

Planter 4: Corn (2 varieties), sunflower starts (3 varieties).

The deck is mostly done, too: tomatoes, lettuce, pumpkins, sunflowers, and a random succulent I found growing in the planter. Also, a pumpkin start in the pear tree planter.

The birds (and the newly hatched fledglings) have taken it upon themselves to attack the fresh green leaves and enjoy the seed space for dustbaths. Time for some bird netting to deter them from getting the starts and seedlings before they can get established.

For the tomatoes, will go full-on Italian grandfather style this year and actively prune the side-shoots and suckers so that all of the energy is concentrated on one or two vines. Last year I waited too long to start and felt that I couldn’t prune vines that were already producing fruit.
