Where to go for a sandwich these days?
The Baguette Box has closed their store in Fremont. They still have their Capitol Hill store, but that is a long way to go to get fries and a drunken chicken sandwich. La Barriga Llena has also closed (and replaced by another taquería that makes a decidedly inferior torta) in favor of their mobile truck business.
Fortunately, there are some new contenders.
Dot’s Delicatessen in near Fremont is one of new spate of charcuterie shops. We had their porchetta sandwich, which was out of this world. Their Reuben is supposed to be amazing, too. Also, super yummy poutine. I think that we may have a new winner.
Martino’s Smokehouse deserves mention (in part because they are occupying a space formerly occupied by a vegan shoe store. Really). The tri-tip sandwich was quite tasty and some of their other menu items sound intriguing. Being on Phinney ridge, it is slightly closer than Dot’s and has marginally better street parking options.
I hope that Bongo’s will eventually get off the ground. Occupying that odd corner where 65th, Linden, and Woodlawn intersect, it replaces the abandoned U-haul place that had served as a site for selling contraband Yakima cherries and black market Christmas trees. The food still seems to be trying to find its place. Will try again when their Cuban bakery is finally open.
Of course, there are always our favorite standbys of Ken’s Market, Take 5 Urban Market, and Other Coast Cafe, if we want to take a little drive.
