Alton and I met some friends at BrickCon 2013. Half of the soccer team was there (Brodie & Mike and Frankie & Joe were there as well, as well as Sienna, who was off at the open-building tables). This is an annual Lego extravaganza at the Seattle Center for brick building enthusiasts to meet and greet and create, then exhibit their creations to the general public. We showed up for exhibition portion.
Alton was already excited by the prospect of having a dad-and-son-only activity. But as soon as we hit the convention floor, he froze in wide-eyed wonder. Frankly, I was pretty astounded too. These were easily some of the most amazing Lego creations that I have ever seen. We perused the rows and rows of display tables of amazing structures and spacecraft and animated dioramas. It certainly gave a dad a sense of Lego inadequacy. Alton, on the other hand, wanted to build it all.
A big projector screen ran homemade Lego movies and promo clips for the various Lego branded TV series. The booths featured a sampling of an apparently huge cottage industry of Lego spin-offs and support. Custom mini-figs? Check. Hand-painted Lego ammunition boxes? Check. Lego-themed jewelry? Check. Check. Check.
Alton definitely wants to do this again next year.
