National Gymnastics Day!

The kids went to open gym day at the Seattle Gymnastics Academy in celebration of National Gymnastics Day (who knew there was a national gymnastics day?). Nikola (and her friend Anna A. from Brownies) went a-romping on the obstacle course that coaches had created. Alton opted out at the last moment, even though some of his favorite coaches were there. Granted, it was pretty crowded in the mid-afternoon.

Outside they had rented a carnival-style dunk tank, and all of the ticket fees were donated to the Seattle Food Bank. As per his usual, Alton just chose to stand by the side and watch several rounds of kids try to hit the target. Most did not (even the big ones), and they just let the kids just run up and press the lever to dunk the coach into the drink after the third miss. Nikola wanted a try and took her first throw while I was getting my camera ready to take a shot. While looking down I heard the WHIFFFFF of a fast pitch, the CLAAANK of a solid hit, and the SPLOOOOOSH of a coach hitting the water, followed by a cheer from the crowd. In all, she hit 5 of her 6 throws. And the poor coach in the cage got dunked each time. By this time, Alton had steeled himself to try. Again, I missed his first throw. Again, he nailed the target. 4 times in 6 throws.

“Do your kids play baseball?” asked one of the parents.

“Apparently they should,” I laughed.
