Last Summer Hurrah (2013)!

8/25/2013:

“This is heaven,” said Nikola, “This is how I will remember tonight: S’mores and the hot tub!”

SeabrookGoogleMapWe closed out the summer of travel with a trip to Seabrook. This resort town adjacent to Pacific Beach was named as a Sunset Magazine Idea Town. The drive was about 3 hours, some of which was spent driving in circles in Hoquiam trying (futilely) to find a market. Should have stopped at that Top Market at the other side of Aberdeen; or even better, the Safeway on L Street! After Hoquiam, however, there are no other supermarket options. On the coast, there is little else around other than the town and some other smaller pockets of homes. There is a cute central Main Street easily accessible by gently winding tree-lined streets flanked by cute little sea cottages (some of which are quite grand).
Our rental, “The Deck House” is a two-story 3BR 2BA home with a master suite on the main floor, full kitchen, and an open layout dining area and living space with gas fireplace, stereo, hideaway TV and DVD player. Upstairs is a second full bedroom, bathroom, kids room (with 2 bunk beds), Wii and DVD player. There is a private Jacuzzi in the back, and a wraparound porch with Adirondack chairs and gas BBQ. The porch leads to a cute little path leading along the woods down to a forest with giant tree trunks for kids to climb in and on. All of the sidewalks and paths are surfaced with crushed shell. Across the street is an indoor pool and hot tub, very convenient. The streets have very little traffic, so a good location for Nikola and Alton to practice riding their bikes. There is no AT&T service here (only Verizon), but the house and the pool house have wi-fi so we’re not totally cut off from the world.

It is clear out with scattered clouds. We took a little hike down a trail through the woods, past ravines of fallen, ancient trees. And on the other side of the ravine, construction of the next phase of the community. Along the path, people have hidden/planted little fairies and gnomes in the stumps of trees, sometimes even little dioramas. Cute, if perhaps a little contrived. I envision planned community sweat shops churning out these fairy dioramas.

Across a small highway crossing (with very little traffic) is a footpath that leads to the beach. For a gorgeous summer day on the beach, it is surprisingly unpopulated here. Like Neskowin, but without anyone else there.

After an afternoon of digging in the sand, jumping in the waves, and watching the sun set over the Pacific, we headed up the steps back into town. Really just a 5 min walk to the cottage, for a soak in the Jacuzzi. Then, it was just a short one-block walk to one of the firepits scattered throughout the resort. Always prepared, Shaynee brought fixins for s’mores. The perfect end to a great first day.

"This is heaven."
