Alton’s 5th!

Today was Alton’s 5th birthday extravaganza. This was the first year that he has been counting down the days until his birthday.

Alton vacillated between wanting a space-themed party and not. Of course, it ended up being space-themed in the end. The sparkly “moon rocks” (which in reality are probably everything but sparkly) and “meteorites” were collected around the neighborhood by the kids and spray painted by Alton and daddy. They turned out really well!

Sam (who runs the date-night at the preschool) was there for face painting, and Alton wanted a balloon person (who made some pretty amazing creations for the kids). There was a rocket art station and a paper airplane station (manned by daddy), which was a surprising hit. Some kids tried to make their own plane, or decorate one made by one of the daddies (why not the mommies?). Alton combined some of his favorite activities by launching airplanes while going down the slide. As always, he asked that people not sing “Happy Birthday” to him.

Once the kids were good and sugared up, we released the “meteor drop” of 130 balloons from a bag suspended from the ceiling. The pullstring did not work as smoothly as described on the packaging. Thankfully, gramps was tall enough that he and Alton could just reach up and shake them out (while daddy stood on the upper balcony and thwacked the bag and took pictures).

Nikola was sick with a mild GI bug, which Shaynee didn’t want to unleash on all of our guests. This was pretty upsetting for Nikola, who really wanted to be with Alton, but it was a fair call. Instead, she got to have some special afternoon time with mommy, while daddy and gramps and grandma manned the birthday party. Not to leave anything to chance (or to my memory), she wrote out an itinerary for all of us to follow.

One of Alton’s gifts was a Lego Star Wars kit (his current obsession) that was fairly generically labelled as “IMPERIAL PILOT”. He asked Nikola to read the box to him. She was not at a particularly good reading angle, so she told him “imperial PLOT” and he was more than excited to add an “imperial PLOT” to his growing fleet. When she got a better look at the box and corrected her error, he wouldn’t hear anything of it and was particularly resistant to her calling it an “imperial PILOT”. Fortunately, he then built a “rebel PLOT” craft so that they could be friends.
