Easter Slug!

Nikola surveys the Easter baskets

Easter morning found the kids in very excited moods. Nikola had a very hard time falling asleep last night and she even woke up for about 1.5 hours in the middle of the night because she was so excited. I don’t think that she was even this excited on Christmas Eve. Or maybe she was.The kids had baskets of treats from the grandparents. Alton got hung up on the first piece of chocolate that he found (“Can I eat it? Can I eat it? Can I eat it?”).

We had dyed eggs the day before using Kool-Aid as the colorant. The egg hunt was a smashing success (69 plastic eggs and 12 boiled eggs), mostly inside the house. The weather was quite agreeable this weekend (clear and cold on Saturday, clear and warm on Sunday), so Shaynee hid about 30 plastic eggs out in the yard. Apparently, slugs are drawn to the scent of chocolate, as they gravitated toward the ones with chocolate treats compared to those without. The scavenger hunt is becoming a tradition. We write out directions to where a present can be found, then cut the instructions into parts that are hidden in the eggs. Once all of the eggs have been gathered, the kids get to put together the clues to find the present. Nikola found a Playmobil set in their tent in the basement playroom. Alton had a LEGO set waiting in the chest freezer.

Aside from the day’s festivities, it has been a generally busy weekend here. Shaynee loves to decorate the house for the holidays and Easter is one of the Majors. When I had reorganized the attic for more efficient storage (love that wire shelving!), an area of the shelving was blocked off for grouping the various holiday decorations. Easter is second in cubic footage only to Christmas. Halloween is next, followed by a sliver for Valentines. There are several boxes labelled “Birthday, misc” but that doesn’t count as holiday decorating.

On Saturday, it was parent observation day at Nikola’s ballet class. She was equally excited that we were there as well as self-conscious that there was much more of an audience than she is used to. Alton and his buddy, Brodie, were playing in the hallway. I’m not sure the exact nature of the game, but it involved crashing toy cars into the wall. Loudly. Afterward, Alton had an Easter egg hunt with about a dozen of the kids from the Phinney preschool while Nikola attended a different egg function. Shaynee’s parents have been visiting, as it is Nan’s 70th birthday this weekend. We took them to dinner at Tilth, which is always a great experience. For the rest of the week, they’ll be seeing the sights on Orcas Island. Hopefully it will not rain up there as it is forecasted to do down here.
