Left!

Alton and I just finished listening to a Radiolab segment about left-hand dominance and why handedness has not been extinguished from the human gene pool. I figured that would be a good reason to check out my degree of handedness with the Edinburgh handedness inventory. Yep, the results were pretty much what I expected.

State!

Nikola had own enough rounds during regular season tournaments to qualify for the state championships. This amounted to a total of 3 rounds won, but it was enough to qualify. So she and Monse convened with 1600 other elementary students from around WA state at Pier 91, where the cruise ships depart. Nikola won her …

Driving lessons!

Given how much of the year we have wet weather here, folks in Seattle still drive surprisingly poorly in the rain. After observing somebody performing a particularly stupid driving maneuver… Terry: Don’t drive like that, Alton. Alton: I know, daddy.<thoughtful pause>Alton: Daddy, when I get older, will you teach me to drive like a Californian? …

Mid-winter surf and sun!

Snow day! (finally)

Finally got a little dusting of a couple inches of snow last night. The kids woke to a winter wonderland. With some mild bundling, we went out and the kids sledded down the sidewalk. It turns out that ours (Evanston) is the steepest street in the immediate area, so all of the neighborhood used our …

Slumber!

Nikola’s birthday sleep-over was this weekend, with Monse, Jane, Siena, and Anika. The girls had a great time. Many of the activities involved chasing or being chased by Alton, so at times it became a roller coaster of excitement alternating with aggravation (on both sides of the gender divide). One of the West Woodland parents …

Flash!

Alton has been asking about the 1980 film d’arte, Flash Gordon. Alton: What super powers does Flash have? Daddy: Well, he doesn’t really have any superpowers. He is just really really brave and strong. Alton: Like Russell Wilson? Daddy: Um, yeah. Like Russell Wilson. Well, they are both quarterbacks. But Flash is for every one …
